American Designers Charles and Ray Eames in their search for a ‘better way’ developed an innovative technique for moulding plywood and in doing so created this iconic piece of furniture that continues to impress today. Moulding thin sheets of lightweight veneer into gently curved shapes gave hard wood a soft and inviting look.
The same technology that resulted in their iconic moulded lounge chair was again applied in 1946 to create a simple lightweight coffee table. A rounded, slightly indented table top creates a lean profile that forms a strikingly simple but beautifully modern centrepiece.
This designer coffee or occasional table will add a designer touch to any room.

THE DESIGNER
Charles Eames (1907-1978) and Ray Eames (1914-1988)
Charles and Ray are best known for their groundbreaking contributions to both furniture design and architecture.
Charles attended Washington University on scholarship for two years before the university reportedly dropped him because of his “too modern” views. He then began working in an architectural office and in 1930 opened his own architectural office extending his design ideas beyond architecture, before receiving a fellowship to Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan, where he later became the head of the design department.
In 1946, Evans Products Company began producing the Eameses’ moulded plywood furniture. Their moulded plywood chair was called “the chair of the century” by the influential architectural critic Esther McCoy.
Shortly after production was taken over by Herman Miller, Inc., who continues to produce the furniture in the United States today, including the world-renowned Eames lounge chair, now in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
In 1949, Charles and Ray designed and built their own home in California. Their design and innovative use of materials made the House a mecca for architects and designers from around the globe.
